Negotiation interpreting

In negotiation interpreting, the interpreter renders short passages into the other language one after the other – in both language directions and without any equipment. Because interpreting takes place in conversations with few participants, this form is also called liaison interpreting.

Negotiation interpreting is a form of consecutive interpreting. Our negotiation interpreters are familiar with the business customs of the countries concerned, have intercultural experience and treat all content in strict confidence.

When you need negotiation interpreters

A manageable number of participants is always a prerequisite. Typical assignments:

  • contract and price negotiations
  • merger negotiations
  • arbitration proceedings
  • political negotiations

For working meetings, staff interviews or interviews, the term liaison interpreting is more common:

  • working meetings
  • staff interviews
  • interviews

Negotiation interpreting is not court interpreting

Despite what the German term might suggest, negotiation interpreting is not used in court hearings. There, everything said is whispered simultaneously to the foreign-language party, and their own contributions are interpreted back consecutively.

Also possible online

Negotiation and liaison interpreting also works via telephone or video conference. Because the interpreter waits until a passage is finished, a single audio channel is sufficient – any common conferencing tool is suitable. See remote interpreting.

What to consider when planning

  • No equipment needed: this is the big advantage over simultaneous interpreting.
  • Twice the time: the interpreter waits until the speaker has finished. Plan accordingly more time.
  • Listening twice: anyone who understands both languages hears everything twice. Some appreciate this, however, because it gives them time to think.
