Remote interpreting, video interpreting or Remote Simultaneous Interpreting (RSI)

The term distance interpreting basically refers to all types of interpreting in which one or more participants are not in the same room as the other participants. One type of remote interpreting is called remote interpreting, in which the interpreters are remote. The remote interpreter(s) may be in another room or even on another continent.

Remote interpreting is often used in video or telephone conferences, webinars or other forms of hybrid or virtual events. The term video interpreting is therefore also common. It is particularly important to use the right conference technology so that, on the one hand, the interpreters can work well and, on the other hand, the participants can speak to each other without interference, confidentially and without technical hurdles.

The most common form of remote interpreting is the so-called Remote Simultaneous Interpreting (RSI). This interpretation takes place simultaneously, i.e. parallel to the spoken word in real time. Technically, however, consecutive interpretation via remote is also possible. In this case, the spoken word is not transmitted immediately but in individual blocks with a time delay into the target language.

Technical solutions for remote interpreting

To technically implement video interpretation, the usual telephone or video conference tools are often not suitable. Not all of them are capable of transmitting several independent audio tracks in parallel, for example. For this reason, we recommend the use of an interpreter hub.

Interpreting hub or RSI hub

A hub is a permanently or temporarily equipped room with several interpreter booths. In these interpreting booths, the interpreters have the same working conditions as at a conference in a stationary booth or a mobile booth set up only for the event. This means that teamwork, which is particularly important at longer events, can be organised smoothly. The interpreters can take turns, communicate by hand signal and also exchange information between the language teams.

A hub usually has a particularly stable internet connection. The audio and video signals can be routed via public cloud servers. For reasons of confidentiality and security, there are hubs that maintain their own server infrastructure. Access for participants can be protected by password and transmission can be encrypted.

The advantages at a glance

  • The event is coordinated in the hub. Participation is possible from anywhere in the world as long as there is an internet connection.
  • In the Hub, the interpreters can work in several teams per language and also take turns with each other. This is essential for longer events.
  • All participants speak in their mother tongue and can choose which language channel they want to listen to. Ten languages and more are possible in parallel.
  • The hub has a stable internet connection with particularly high bandwidth to ensure the best quality image and sound transmission.
  • Every Hub event is accompanied by a team of technicians and, if desired, supported by moderators.
  • The confidentiality of the content is guaranteed by encrypted transmission and password protection.
  • Of course, all hybrid or virtual events can also be recorded and archived for later use.

During the Corona crisis, a number of temporary hubs were established in Germany. We would be happy to advise you on the selection of a suitable service provider.

Remote interpreting from home or from the SIMCONSULT office

Technically, it is also possible for interpreters to work for a virtual event from home or from the SIMCONSULT office. However, except for shorter events or events with few participants, such solutions should generally be avoided as they entail some disadvantages. Just contact us if you have any questions. We will be happy to advise you!
