The interpreter in the hot seat
or a quick change from backstage to the spotlight. The "World Awards" were held in Hamburg in October with their patron Mikhail Gorbachev. SIMCONSULT provided an interpreter for German and Russian for an interview on the NDR live TV show "DAS". The guest of honour, Mikhail Gorbachev was indisposed and the organisers promptly decided instead to interview the interpreter who had interpreted for the Russian statesman several times before. A professional interpreter of course is never fazed by such sudden changes of plan.
Apart from that, we were pleased to book a wide range of assignments covering several languages this autumn and before we know it, we are already making plans for the holiday period around Christmas and New Year. How time flies!
Fidelity Investments GmbH
Our paths crossed with Fidelity twice since the summer. For the sixth year in succession SIMCONSULT interpreters worked at the Fidelity Investments series of seminars in Berlin, Frankfurt, DDsseldorf and Munich in September.
AIIC
On 7th November in Berlin the German Region of AIIC, the International Association of Conference Interpreters celebrated the 50th anniversary of the founding of the association in Paris in 1953. The occasion was marked by a panel discussion followed by a reception at the Foreign Office in Berlin. Those taking part were former Foreign Minister Hans-Dietrich Genscher, the journalist/politician Cornelia Schmalz-Jakobsen, the Polish ambassador Andrzej Byrt, the President of AIIC Jenny Mackintosh, Norbert Glante MEP and JJrg Moberg, Sales Director of Fidelity Investments, whose apt comments on the work of interpreters on the private market were greeted with applause by the colleagues.
European Surgical Institute, Johnson & Johnson, DePuy International Ltd. and Endo-Club Nord
Our medical interpreters were busy again in the autumn. DePuy held a conference on "Minimal intervention knee surgery" with German and English; ESI organised a workshop entitled "European colo-rectal surgery days" with German, English and Italian in November; in October the same languages were interpreted at the "Wound Management" Symposium of J & J. Again in October a SIMCONSULT team worked for the sixth time in English and German for the "Endo Club Nord" in the Hamburg Congress Center.
Hamburg Fire Department
For the second time since 11th September 2001 the topic was the coordination of catastrophe prevention at the 2nd International Congress on "Modern risk deterrent systems, strategies for fire services, rescue services and health services" in the Hamburg Congress Centre. This year the rescue services from Russia reported on the tragic hostage-taking incident at theatre in Moscow in 2002. The next international congress on catastrophe prevention is scheduled for 2005.
Airbus in Finkenwerder
There was another series of interpreting assignments in Finkenwerder at the constantly expanding Airbus premises. The handover of the first A318, the smallest member of the Airbus family with 100 seats, by Airbus President Noel Forgeard to Pierre-Henri Gourgeon, Vice President of Air France was very impressive. The giant bird, polished to a shine, stood in the hangar in front of the stage, the rows of chairs and the red carpet - not small by any means. After a brief intermission the interpreters shifted to another scene on site to interpret for a meeting of the Supervisory Board.
Language diversity
a + o Angelika Oplesch Gesellschaft ffr Kommunikationsberatung mbH engaged SIMCONSULT interpreters at their meeting in October at a unique Christmas auction for the childrens' charity, SOS Kinderddrfer with German and Portugese.
English and French were the languages used by the BDLI, the Federal Association of the German Aerospace Industry, at the trilateral meeting of medium-sized companies.
A SIMCONSULT team of eight interpreters working with English, German, Spanish and French was commissioned by moment Agentur ffr integriertes Eventmarketing GmbH in September for a presentation for expert journalists by the DIFA, Deutsche Immobilienfonds AG.
We also worked in September for Engel & Zimmermann AG, Agentur ffr Wirtschafts-kommunikation at the "Brandy de Jerez" press conference at the SIDE-Hotel in Hamburg. The languages were German and Spanish.
Schieder Möbel
Moving on to December, we are pleased to be interpreting for the sixth year in succession at the Schieder-Möbel management meeting, this time in Berlin. The languages are German, English, Italian and Russian.
As language and communication professionals we are of course happy to seize any opportunity to apply our skills. English and German are the most frequently used languages in our market, but it is also gratifying to work at meetings and conferences where other languages, such as French, Italian Spanish or Russian are spoken. These languages are a living part of Europe and should not be neglected in our everyday business life.
And once more the season is upon us. The time has come for us to wish you, our business friends and partners all the very best for the holiday season. For all of us we hope that 2004 will be a good year, a year in which you will prosper, hopefully with the support of our know-how in language communication.
